The holiday season is a difficult time for many people as unrealistic expectations are created which can lead to frustration and even symptoms of depression. For some, the holidays are a time of conflict with family or friends. Others have recently experienced the loss of a loved one. Some people put pressure on themselves, their family, or their friends by demanding that maintain happiness and continue being in “the holiday spirit. This causes even more anxiety, greater stress, and frustration.
What can you do:
Do not forget that your thoughts affect your mood and your life. Try to think logically, realistically, and measuredly. Seek advice from a person you trust. Think about how you would have advised a loved one yourself if they were in a similar situation.
Be grateful for what you have, instead of focusing on what you do not have.
You need to realize that it is not normal to be happy all the time.
Do not compare yourself and your family with others. Each person is different and charts his own course.
Do not believe in the "ideal" Christmas served by the media.
Do not have high expectations of others. Lower your expectations and any attachment to them.
Forget the "shoulds" and "musts". Experience the present moment and enjoy as much as you can.
Try to accept your imperfections - no one is perfect and how condescension.
Do not push yourself to make everything perfect. Let not the impossibility of perfection affect you.
Take care of those who are alone during the holidays.
Do volunteering.
If you have the opportunity to take a trip.
Reach out to those that you haven't heard from in a long time.
Discover new books and movies.
If you are interested in the religious and spiritual aspects of the holidays, focus on the deeper meanings of Christmas.
Focus your thoughts on all the good things that symbolize Christmas - love, kindness, generosity, gratitude.
Those who are not experiencing holiday blues at this time, consider supporting those who suffer.
